Sankranti is the biggest and most important among all festivals in
Andhra Pradesh. Sankranti is a harvest festival, marked by the most
awaited gangireddulavaru, where men visit each home with their
beautifully decorated bulls.
This is a centuries-old tradition that continues to survive despite
all the odds. The men are heavily dressed with a long mustache while
the bulls are adorned with colourful, decorative sarees, with flowers
tied around their horns along with anklets in their legs.
The Gangireddu (decorated bull) is taken from one home to the other by its master, who plays nadaswaram. These bulls are even trained to dance and perform acrobatics for entertaining the crowd. When the master plays the musical instrument nadaswaram and beats the drums, the bulls dance to these tunes. The impressive and rhythmic feats of Gangireddu are quite pleasing!
